Tesla Drives into India: Model Y Launched, Mumbai Showroom Opens!

After years of waiting and negotiations, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market. The well-known electric vehicle manufacturer, led by Elon Musk, opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. This marks an important milestone for the American company in one of the fastest-growing automotive markets in the world. The eagerly awaited Tesla launch in India features the Tesla Model Y as its first offering. This mid-size electric SUV is now available for bookings, and deliveries are expected to start later this year. Tesla Model Y Price in India RevealedThe price of the Tesla Model Y in India starts at ₹61 lakh (on-road) for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant. The long-range RWD variant is priced at ₹67.89 lakh. These prices are notably higher than the Model Y’s price in the USA and other global markets, mainly due to India’s high import duties on completely built units (CBUs). The ex-showroom price for the RWD Model Y is ₹59.89 lakh, while the long-range RWD is ₹67.89 lakh. Additional costs such as registration and insurance add to the total on-road price. Customers can reserve their Tesla with a token payment. Deliveries for the standard RWD Model Y are expected in Q3 2025, and the Long Range RWD in Q4 2025. First Stop: Tesla Showroom MumbaiThe first Tesla showroom in Mumbai is situated at Maker Maxity Mall in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a key financial area. This 4,000-square-foot space features two variants of the Model Y. After Mumbai, Tesla plans to open a second showroom in Delhi, strengthening its presence in major Indian cities. Model Y: Features and SpecificationsThe India-spec Model Y comes packed with premium features. It includes a large 15.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, ventilated and heated power-adjustable front seats, an 8-inch rear screen, a 9-speaker sound system, ambient interior lighting, and a panoramic glass roof. For safety, the vehicle has eight external cameras for advanced driver-assistance functions. The RWD Model Y offers a WLTP-rated range of up to 500 km and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range RWD variant has a range of 622 km (WLTP) and accelerates quicker, achieving 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Both variants have a top speed of 201 km/h. Competition and the Road AheadTesla’s entrance into the Indian market increases competition in the luxury EV segment. Other players like BYD (with models such as the Sealion 7, Atto 3, and Seal), Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volvo XC40 Recharge are already established here. While Tesla’s initial approach involves importing models, the Indian government’s new EV policy offers lower import duties for companies that commit to local manufacturing. This move could affect Tesla’s long-term plans for a “Make in India” strategy. Tesla’s arrival in India is set to change consumer expectations in the premium electric vehicle market and represents a major step toward advancing the country’s electric mobility revolution.
